You can rent a car to drive up the mountains and enjoy the breathtaking views of this part New Zealand. The Southern Alps of New Zealand offer some seriously good skiing and boarding. Five hundred kilometres worth of mountain ranges divide the South Island from North to South like a spine. New Zealand is a major Southern Hemisphere ski destination, with most of the country’s ski resorts located on the South Island. The typical ski season in this area starts around mid-June. However, good winters can last as late as November.
The North Island is warmer, and its mountains are shorter than the South Island, so its seasons are normally shorter. Dubbed the “Southern Hemisphere’s premier winter destination,” Queenstown – further south – is a haven for skiers and snowboarders and those that just love the apres ski atmosphere. From Christchurch you can travel along the scenic highway 72 to get to Mt Hutt. It is 14km to the resort from the main road. The track is unpaved and can be ice-affected or muddy, as well as slippery. It is definitely necessary to carry chains.
